  1. This short story was very interesting because it shows how Mollie and other women in their society did not have to work and all they had to do was keep care of the house while their husbands did the work and brought home the money. As she journeyed her husband’s, Gerald, busy lifestyle with business she noticed that all the men had something to say and observed how they interacted with one another in their way to work. She listened at how they talked about not only their wives but women in general and how they have to work so that their wives can have all these crazy, outrageous hats and clothes that they do wear. Mollie also noticed how mean take care of their business like with the bill that she had forgot to mention. Gerald thought nothing else of it and while she stated that she would still have been at home crying about mentioning it to him for the first and second time.
Mollie also had incite now about how men viewed women when she rode by and saw the hats that the other women had on and thought that some of them were “wild” and wondered if people thought the same about her. I believe that Mollie wondered what it would be like to be a man so that she would be able to see what the life of the working man is all about. As Gerald told her that he did not want her to be included in politics because it seemed as though the men talked more about politics and women rather than work. I think that that could have been a way to get their minds off their jobs as well. Also, I believe that the men had both an advantage and a disadvantage as to working, By this I mean that men worked to escape the emotions of their wives and to have an open mind and to work so that their families would not have to need or want for anything. Gilman did an outstanding job with this short story demonstrating how some women want to be in the same positions as men but in some cases they can not handle the curve ball that life may throw at them.

  2. I agree with Ericka. This story was very interesting to me as well, mostly because I sometimes think about what it would be like to switch genders; I wonder would it really be that different? This story is very creative in that Charlotte Perkins Gilman seems to easily place herself within the male perspective of the daily events included in her story. I especially liked toward the end of the story when Gilman brings up the point that all the craziness men complain about in women is encouraged by the men themselves through their reactions to women who choose not follow the social norms. It draws attention to the fact that, generally, as much as we dislike monotonous conventions, we dislike change even more.
